Ice sailing was and still is very popular winter sport, especially in the Sandusky Bay, where there are still many active ice sailing clubs. A related sport, land sailing, utilizes a configuration with an iceboat-like fuselage or frame equipped with wheels instead of runners. Iceboats commonly used for racing are usually only for one person, but several classes of two-seat and multiple-seat iceboats are more or less common. Description: Caption reads: "Ice skating on Brookside Pond, Ashland, Ohio." Brookside Park was constructed in 1917 as a result of fundraising by local jeweler Frank Downs and his pastor Rev. A. B. Robertson of the Christian church. The city of Ashland purchased the former Knapp Quarry for $450 and converted the old stone quarry into a duck pond area. Located off of Brookside Drive and Lindale Avenue, the park included the quarry area and surrounding six acres of land. Brookside Park expanded in later years, with the addition of a swimming pool, the Guy C. Myers Memorial Band Shell, baseball diamonds, basketball courts, tennis courts, shelter houses, shuffleboard, and horseshoes. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Caption reads: "Trailer camp at Island Park operated by the City of Dayton. A completely equipped municipal camp, for campers and 'trailerites.' In addition to parking facilities, city water, gas, electricity and police protection are furnished for 50¢ a night or $3.00 per week." Island Park opened on June 20, 1914, on the former location of White City Amusement Park in Dayton, Ohio. White City had been destroyed in the flood of 1913, and interest to rebuild it was sparked after the Dayton Canoe Club held its first regatta here on July 13, 1913. The park became an ideal location for canoeing, boating, ice skating, concerts, dancing, and general recreation, and remained a point of recreational focus for decades. Description: Three photographs document scenes at the annual Ski Carnival at Snow Trails Ski Resort near Mansfield, Ohio in 1967. The first photograph shows the Ski Carnival Queen. Two other photographs of resort visitors are also included. The Snow Trails Ski Carnival began in 1961 and features a Bikini Race, in which skiers compete wearing swimsuits. Other events at the carnival include serious ski racing, dances in the lodge, and the crowning of the Ohio Winter Ski Carnival Queen. The photographs measure 2" x 2" (5.08 x 5.08 cm). Snow Trails Ski Resort opened in 1960. Founder Dave Carto became interested in the sport while serving in the Army in Minnesota. Snow Trails was the first ski resort built that relied completely on artificial snow. It became the first resort in Ohio to operate a double chair lift in 1962. View on Ohio Memory.
